Slieve Snaght Challenge 2009This is a featured page

Slieve Snaght Challenge Sunday 3rd May.

The 4th Slieve Snaght Challenge was held on Sunday last at the North Pole Bar,Drumfrees. There was a total of 69 entries for the confined competition which is the most keenly fought event in North Poles calendar.
The 'Challenge' has a special place in the history of North Pole Cycling Club.It was the first ever event organised by by group of local cyclists back in 2006.The event was a huge success and apart from helping to raise funds for Duchenes Muscular Dystrophy it proved that there was an appetite for cycling in the region.Shortly afterwards North Pole Cycling Club was established and now has 100 active members. The club has been involved in assisting fundraising for a variety of charities over the last three years.
Sunday's event involved a 20 mile cycle race over the Carn mountain and back again through Ballyliffin. Then the contestants ran 6 miles to the top of Slieve Snaght mountain and back again to the finish line at the North Pole Bar.Each team comprised two North Pole members who must have a combined age of at least 80 years.Last years winners Owenie Mc Kinney and Jim Porter were keen to hold on to the title but were up against two other teams who were equally ambitious. Pat Mc Laughlin who with Barney O'Donnell won the event in 2006,was teamed with Pat Doherty for the 2009 attempt.A rigorous training regime was facilitated by the recession in the building industry. Many hours of beach running,weight-lifting and hill running were alternated with many bike miles by the two Pats.Coached by John Begley, the biggest problem was limiting the risk of training injuries.'My job was to keep them fit for the big day on a no-win no-fee basis' said the local sheep farmer who knows every foot of Slieve Snaght. The hill was very wet this year and local knowledge proved crucial as the hill section proved to be decisive.Looks like it was money well spent.
Another team who were not short of enthusism was that of Adrian Lynch and Seamus Murphy.'Iron-man' Lynch took advantage of every spare minute to train over the last few months.Adrian was often seen cycling to Carndonagh at first light before running two miles over the hill before breakfast. He knew what he had to do as he often witnessed the training regime of his opponents. His partner Seamus Murphy would have preferred drier weather and did not take well to the very slippy course.A few dry days might have made all the difference and possibly enabled Murphy to run to his true potential. As it was the result was decisive with Pat Doherty and Pat Mc Laughlin winning from Lynch and Murphy by a margin of 15 minutes.McKinney and Porter got 3rd place,16 minutes behind the winning team.
