Fullerton takes the 'Supervet' Cycling Title at the North Pole.

North Pole Cycling Club held their first ever road race on Sunday going twice around the club's time trial course at Drumfrees. The course started at The North Pole Bar,travelled northeast to Carndonagh, then northwest to Ballyliffin before turning due south back to Drumfrees. Forty three cyclists took part in the 40 mile race and the event was a resounding success. The course record of 1 hour 52 minutes held by Patrick Mc Callion was shattered by local man Ronan Mc Laughlin who finished in 1 hour 40 minutes and 3 seconds. He was followed home 34 seconds later by Joe Barr,an avid supporter of the North Pole Cycling Club and former Commonwealth Medallist. The average speed of over 38 kph by these two riders was achieved on a windy day and on a hilly course.

The highly coveted Supervet title was fought for in an intense struggle between Carl Fullerton and the favourite Brendan Duffy. Fullerton crossed the 20 mile half-way mark just 10 seconds ahead but Duffy overtook his rival at mile 22 and took a strong lead for the next 17 miles. Fullerton however having suffered a mechanical breakdown on the Carn mountain had to get Marty Noone and his service crew on the scene with a new bike. Noone's instant response was crucial and after a quick swop Fullerton took chase. He caught up with Duffy at mile 39 and took the chequered flag by a mere 11 seconds. Speaking after the event Fullerton's manager Denis Donnelly said that he never doubted his man's ability to take the title but he knew that it would not come easy. He wished Brendan Duffy well for the future and hoped that if he was looking for a new manager that he would call him.

North Pole Chairman, Patrick Mc Callion thanked all the cyclists who took part for making it such a memorable day. He particularly thanked all those who gave up their free time to act as helpers and stewards. This ends a very successful first season for the club. Winter training will start from next Sunday at 10.30 pm. at the North Pole Bar. Groups will leave together at a moderate pace and normally will cover 30-40 miles. All are welcome and if interested please contact Phelim Mc Callion at Bikes and Toys(087-2758818)Training co-ordinator or Barney O'Donnell(086-1646664).
